I’m Not Inclined To Resign To Maturity

https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/How do I stay positive in a negative world? I’m positive I’ve had brushes with cynicism, brief flings with pessimism, but lately I’ve been feeling less, I don’t know, less confident in the positive aspects of life. In days past, I thought being positive and honest was doing the right thing.
https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/I somehow believed being positive and honest would help me have a ‘good life’, it would make me ‘happy’, maybe even help others have a ‘good life’, but society keeps screaming at me that I’ve got it all wrong. And the screams are getting louder every day.
Dishonest people get what they want.
Greedy people get what they want.
Narcissistic people get what they want.
At least it seems that way.

https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/

Maybe I’m over thinking this, being too adult, too mature, maybe Steve Franks got it right in the Psych (best TV series ever or pretty close) theme song, “I’m not inclined to resign to maturity”. If what I saw in the past few years is adulting, then I see why: video games, smartphones, fast food, onesies, drones, vacations, etc. are so popular – they make us feel like children again.

Speaking of feeling like a child, while I still have Netflix for free and returned to Stars Hollow to catch up on Gilmore girls Resurrected (isn’t that the title, it should be).

When I started watching Gg, in 2000, the world was a really different place.

https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/
It hadn’t been completely invaded by smartphones, fake news, and lattes – people still talked to each other, only had semi-fake news, and drank basic legal stimulants, er, coffee…

https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/

Seven seasons of Gg…still going? Thanks, charming-fast-talkers-narcissistical-wholesome-spend-the-GDP-of-a-small-country-on-food-emotion-stringtuggers who make me feel hungry and slightly brain hurty.

https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/

Brain hurt aside, I don’t want to drink the Objectivism koolaid  https://yadadarcyyada.com/2013/08/29/the-pursuit-of-happiness-cult/

https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/

It revived the ghosts of TV past and present (dare I hope, future?): Smallville, Roswell, Buffy, Charmed, Jared Padalecki – portrayed Dean in Gilmore Girls, later plays Sam in Supernatural, with his brother, Dean played by Jensen Ackles, hmmm, I’m confused https://yadadarcyyada.com/2013/08/26/supernatural-impala/

https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/

So, oops, I watched it again…

https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/

Apocalyptic/fantasy/historical books, movies, and TV shows are sooo popular: Hunger Games; DoctorWho; Colony; The Matrix; Vikings; Westworld; Grimm; Sleepy Hollow; Game Of Thrones; The Walking Dead; Terminator; Supernatural; Revolution; The Last Man on Earth; Z Nation; Aftermath (you get the point).

https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/

Worlds in these books, movies, and TV shows are full of horrible things, really horrible things, but…less consumerism, fewer people arguing over everything and not seeing other people’s points of view, less obvious fakeness, no smart phone dependency, and pimped out coffee – I can learn to handle a crossbow or find someone else who can handle one.

https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/

My New Year’s resolutions just begging to be broken…

  • Avoid foods that make me feel sluggish, ill, regretful, sigh, oops I ate it again.

    https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/

  •  Stop celebrating birthdays. This birthday made me feel my mortality – or was it watching long lists of celebrities who died in 2016, hmmm, I’m far from a celebrity, so I’m probably ok, for now.

    https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/

  • Less watching shows like Van Helsing (the series); it’s good, if you like apocalyptic world orders where life is drained out of people – since Trump was elected POTUS and hacking in general (Russia in particular) is a cool thing now, I’m guessing the answer is a big fat juicy ‘yes’!

    https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/

  • Don’t smirk when I hear stupid or bizarre things, ie. birthday platitudes like, “Your best years are ahead of you”. Really? Saying I’m in midlife wasn’t unrealistic enough? Unless I win a super-duper lottery, and/or get a 50 book publishing deal, https://yadadarcyyada.com/2015/06/21/how-to-get-your-book-published/ and/or start dating David Tennant or James Roday (at the same time?), my best years are years I can only remember (what I can remember). And when people tempt fate at New Year when they say next year couldn’t be any worse (especially this year).  Really?

    https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/

  • Live my life with more passion, don’t give in to FOMO  https://yadadarcyyada.com/2014/11/08/is-everyone-hanging-out-without-me/ and never run out of Windex, wait, that might all have to do with watching My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.

    https://yadadarcyyada.com/2017/01/06/im-not-inclined-to-resign-to-maturity/

I know, you know…

Welcome to 2017, go out and be!

  1. Lol! I loved this. You’re delightful.

I know that feeling so well, the way the world was a better place in the olden days, like about six months ago. Tv sitcoms from Just a few years ago seem so innocent and you wonder what the check has happened to us.

Be positive, be kind, don’t let the negativity get you down, if for no other reason, sheer spite will do.:-)

    1. You know what my Grandpa would always add when someone said “Great minds think alike”? “Fools seldom differ”, but if I’m a fool, I’m good with that and it’s ok, I get in a reflective mood after certain things, I’ve been in epiphany mode (long story and not really a pretty one) so I think thinking comes with it. lol 😉
Thank you for your kind wishes, dear Teagan and I’ll wait patiently for Mr. Tennant to show up, I imagine hes quite busy. 😉
Mega bro fist despite the fact that I was halfway through the first season of ‘Psych’ when Netflix took it off hugs xoxo

      1. The same thought occurred to me. a knee jerk reaction..to… great minds thing alike..fools never differ, Lots of thoughts and ideas yo have. You have to nurture your “inner” child. don’t forget the squishy mud between your toes (when you were a kid) and how great you felt at that time. We always don’t have that luxury of new discoveries. We grew up. Wonderment escapes us as the years go on. We just do…do the work. Maybe just appreciate a warm cup of coffee.

      2. I am trying to embrace my inner child (although she’s got sticky hands and has chocolate on her face) and just keep discovering! 🙂
Hope the week ahead is filled with wonder! 🙂

  2. If you don’t resign to maturity I won’t either. If the leaders of the so-called free world can all act like two year olds maybe the message we’re missing is to throw a few tantrums and get what we want too. Failing that, a bit of foot stomping fun just for the hell of it. The ‘sheer spite’ of being positive holds more appeal than ever when it’s put like that. Happy New Year, Donna and Happy Birthday too if that’s in order. x

  3. I can be angry and have fun at the same time, because often what makes me angry is based on the absurd and ridiculous behavior of others, for instance, that lying, manipulating, groping Littlefingers Donald Trump.

If you are angry, smiling, and laughing all at the same time, then you must be having fun.

  4. After reading this post, I will admit, that I’m happy not to be watching TV any longer. These series sound terrible, even I know there might be few worth looking at sometimes.
I found so much more inner peace after skipping TV many years ago. Now I follow the news, when I feel like and don’t get so many ugly pictures or videos pushed directly in my face.
Your plans for the coming year sound like possible to keep, specially the one with cake 😀
    Enjoy a beautiful weekend, Donna.

    1. Sorry if I gave that impression, I think many of these series are quite entertaining, then again, I find TV relaxing, I guess that’s the best part of the world, having different interests. Cake on the other hand, ummm, cake. 😉
You enjoy the beautiful weekend as well although I bet it’s much much warmer there than here. 😉

  6. You’ve done it again, Donna, made me laugh. Still smiling hard as I write this comment. I think you’ve hit many nails on the head. Many of us feel the way you do – so much negativity in the world, but we won’t let it get us down. I like your attitude. We’re only on this earth for a short time so let’s make the best of it and look for the good and fun things in life. Your blog is one of those things!

  8. Happy New Year! I love how you spun it all around and ended up on a happy note. I am not always happy, but I am no cynic (current incoming US administration aside). I choose to laugh and do whatever good I am capable of and to trust. People do call me gullible and naive and I have never gotten ahead in this life, but I can look in the mirror and smile and be at peace. I don’t need anything more. Your blog posts are always thoughtful and insightful and I’ve enjoyed reading them, even though I don’t watch most of the shows you mention (except, yeah, Pysch). And things aren’t really so different after all, perhaps it is just a nostalgia for the familiar we crave in our midlife. We can contemplate it all on the blogosphere. Blog On!

    1. Yes and even if it was well-intentioned (which I’ll give them that whether it’s true or not) it’s causing a lot of backlash and fear. Also, I think people are a mite too sensitive. Laugh more. Feel want you wanna feel.

  9. A post close to my heart, Donna, because it’s so full of wisdom. I’ve been a completely depressed crankpot since the election. I’ve considered getting a Darryl Dixon crossbow and practicing in my backyard. Does anyone care that I think the world is ending? No one. Is my gloom and doom helping? Not. So perhaps the solution is to enjoy, enjoy, enjoy, and spread the kindness like it’s the latest craze. Thank you, my friend. Enjoy the new year 😀 ❤

  10. Insightful and entertaining, as always.

Maturity is highly overrated! I gave up on it thirty years ago, and just look at me now! Okay, wait. That didn’t come out right. Nevermind. Don’t use me as an example.

Just remember, “Maturity is a bitter disappointment for which no remedy exists, unless laughter could be said to remedy anything.” (Kurt Vonnegut) 😉

    1. It really is, Vonnegut is so right…as Dave Barry says, “What I look forward to is continued immaturity followed by death.”.
Hope this weekend treats you kindly and with a lack of maturity. 😉

  11. I cannot say that I know what you are talking about as it is kind of rambley [sic] (rambelly, ramblie, rambly, rammbly?) to me, but I like the gifs. The more you are connected with everything happening in the world, the more it overwhelms you with all the bad stuff piled on from everywhere. I tune most of it out. Ignorance IS bliss! If I never read a newspaper or watched the news the past 20 years, would I have missed anything? I don’t think so. I do not think anything happened that affected me in any serious way. If I look out the window and the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and there are no zombies stumbling through the backyard, things are probably OK.

    1. I like all your versions of rambly (?), although I prefer meandering lol 😉

  12. Aw it gets better, always. After all everything is gone or going, like a flushed toilet so enjoy that clean bowl feeling. They are still growing cocoa beans, coffee production is stable, cows haven’t dried up, cheese varieties continue to grow, Dr Who and Sherlock are starting new series, Dog still wants walking, cake hasn’t been banned (lot of food here, methinks) I still sleep at night, and the toilet continues to flush on demand. So basically, with all that a sun that won’t stop rising, I’d say we can still make it through the next hail Cesar storm, dust off the sceptic crust and see February for the charlatan it has always been, a winter month who tries to say ‘I’m spring, embrace me’. Keep posting Donna, gift us with gifs, shower us with the flowers of your philosophy Horatio and we will keep coming back and reminding you it’s worth sitting at your keyboard just to receive this heap of wombats doodahs… HNY, HBDY, and smile, it’s the only bit of your face that defies gravity.

  13. To realize that happiness is overrated is a great step towards maturity. The next thing is to avoid people who seek happiness, or indeed people who claim to have found happiness. Believe me, with ageing comes this amazing insight… and it is free. ThaT first sip of morning’s coffee is as good as it gets.

I wouldn’t want to go overboard and break a habit of a lifetime. Marje likes to moan at New Year – there you have it my little secret, keep it to yourself Kyrosmagica blog might not like that I divulged that piece of information! For example, I cannot understand that hype about The Walking Dead. I forced myself to watch 3 or 4 episodes…. and I don’t know what it is everybody likes…. I was an adult all my young life, but I don't believe I've grown up yet. I don't feel mature enough for half the stuff in my life: marriage, babies, divorce; buying a house, retirement. What? How did that happen? I haven't grown up yet and I don't want to. o_O

  20. Aw, Donna, I’m so sorry to hear about the aches and pains and lack of sleep. That combination really sucks. Get better soon, insofar as you can with fibromyalgia (a word that WordPress deems a misspelling–ugh), etc.
As for the other stuff, (1) yeah, maturity is way overrated. Be whatever you want to be, I say (though there’s some irony in me saying that as if I can change you!).
(2). Yes, undoubtedly, tthe world is taking a terrible turn toward racism and xenophobia. The U.S. is not alone in our isolationism and demagoguery, unfortunately. At least there’s the fact that a lot of people are resisting Trumpery and will march and do other such things around inauguration time. If I can, I will participate (maybe in the women’s marches with my daughter, who will inherit Trump’s [and his ilk] crapification of everything). There’s also the group Writers Resist, if you’re interested, Donna. They are not holding a march near me, unfortunately, but if you’re near/in a big city in Canada, they might have something planned. Even though you guys have Trudeau (a much better “deal” than Trump), the sad fact is at least a few of the U.S.’ policies and viewpoints will impact y’all. I’m sorry to say.
Well, I ramble. What’s most important is that you feel better. I’ll send good wishes (?!) toward David Tennant that he’ll see the light and get divorced so he can date you! 🙂 In the meantime, guess there’s always Matt Smith? Take care!

Maturity is definitely overrated or overused or over under or under done?
I think they world is becoming more tolerant, but it’s scaring some people who liked the Old World Order and are having hissyfits because they want to make the world horrible again – we just have to keep fighting for the good and tell ourselves it’s always darkest before the dawn, there are always those who want to drag us backward.
I can wait for David, and I think Mr. Smith would be more interested in Mr. Tennant than me 😉 I think James Roday is still single though. 😉

How I wish life was like being in Stars Hollow, but even golden child Rory messed up. The idea, I suppose, is to savour the happy moments when they do come. I binged Gilmore like crazy when I got sick last year. It’s like all this great tv and film exists just to self-induce happiness when life doesn’t seem to go that way. We can’t all be like 10th all the time, appreciating what’s good. But, we can try to be happy some of the time, even if it’s over a tv show, or a new blog post.

The U.S. is armed for an attack with artillery and watched with bemusement as social media and one of our two political parties saturated the media unverified conspiracy theories and lies.

Surely our people would never be so stupid as to believe that Hillary Clinton was actively running a pedophile ring out of some dinky pizza parlor in God knows where.

    1. I’m there too, Sarah, but trying to be happy (it;s a struggle with everything that’s happening), so I guess, happy, all things considered? Off to try to enjoy. 🙂 Hope the week treats you well. 🙂

  25. Wonderful post! This is illogical says Spock. Kirk is human. He makes mistakes. I admire him for acknowledging it and trying to overcome them: “Risk is our business. That’s what this starship is all about. That’s why we’re aboard her.” We’re human, and we’ll make mistakes let’s hope we can repair mistakes, we can’t avoid them. I’m optimistic in the long term, in spite of US and UK politics. Happy New Year 💖

  26. Looks like I’m #172 to leave a comment.

You’ve been Freshly pressed. I’ve been blogging for 4 years and can tell you that, for me, it’s never going to happen. So that’s something you can be happy about. 🙂

Buffy was/is my favorite series of all time. As for movies, it’s a toss up between Terminator and Star Trek 4. I still have the original Terminator poster I bought after I saw the movie in a theater, but the 6-foot high “I’ll be back” poster that a theater gave me after Terminator was out of the theaters? That was destroyed by a dog years ago. I could be angry about that but…why? It’s just a stupid poster that’s probably worth thousands of dollars now.

So go forth, smile, and remember that not everyone is a stellar blogger like you. 🙂

    1. lol Yes, I think I’m fine with being in the Unfreshly Pressed Club. 😉
Buffy is without compare and those are awesome movie choices. Yes, if only we could get back some of the things we’ve lost.
I hope the week ahead treats you kindly, as for blogging, “I’ll be back!”. 😉

  27. LOL. Hard not to comment. I have trouble getting my husband off the drones, RC planes, and phone games. Sigh. Millennial living. Staying away from icky heavy food (clears the liver, clears the mind) and trying to keep having some good old-fashioned time with loved ones sounds like a plan. Write on!

  28. What is maturity?

Is it when our brain rewires itself (this is not the proper scientific explanation but it works for me) around the age of 25?

From what I’ve read about the brain, it seems to have three lives, for want of a better description.

    1. There is the way the child perceives and processes what’s taken in through the senses from birth until about the age of 12.

    2. Then there is the way adolescents from about age 12 to 25 perceives, processes, and act on what’s taken in through the senses.

    3. Last, hopefully, there is what’s known as the mature brain that doesn’t change after age 25, unless you become senile in old age and suffer from dementia, but that is more like a disease than the way the brain was designed to operate during those years that are thought of as maturity.

National Geographic Magazine ran an interesting piece that helps explain why adolescents think and act the way they do, and it is explained scientifically with lots of data, facts, and research backing it up.

“Moody. Impulsive. Maddening. Why do teenagers act the way they do? Viewed through the eyes of evolution, their most exasperating traits may be the key to success as adults.”

I am trying to adjust my expectations without normalizing things that should never be ok…ever. 😉

  30. I fear I surrendered to maturity a long time ago. But, I can also tell myself “every generation has its hard years”. I think of the people who were alive during the United States Civil War. Look what they went through in five short years – and didn’t have Netflix, pizza or movies.

They had so much and so little and too much and too little, we just seem to have a surplus of whining. 😉

  31. Great post, Donna. I try not to worry ahead. I’ve lived a good many years and I’m confident we’ll get through all this mess. The U.S. is strong and there’s free speech. There’s starting to be a push back already. There are checks and balances built in so no one can become a dictator. Things are not as bad as some would have us think. It’s mostly not “fake news” just the news some don’t like. I try to be informed. The only reading some do is Twitter and Facebook. If they say they don’t watch CNN how do they know what’s on it? Good writing, Donna. 🙂 — Suzanne

    1. It’s true, Suzanne, we faced 9 years of a government that cared nothing about most of the people of Canada, who wanted to pump out dirty oil, destroy the environment, hurt social safety nets, medicine, science, etc. We got through it though it seemed like we wouldn’t. The strength of goodness keeps pushing through. Hope the week ahead treats you kindly. 🙂

  32. Hi Donna,
I loved Psych. My family and I watched every episode. Thanks for helping me happily reflect. I wrote my daughter after reading this.
Regarding the politics, hmmm… I have always agreed people with bad qualities shouldn’t get good things. I have always felt there was a kind of karma in the world. Not sure I still feel that way, but his presidency is young.

I love Psych and though my son was to young to watch it at the time I was so pleased to introduce him to it, he may actually be more hooked than me. It’s my happy place.
Yes, time does usually tell, doesn’t it? I always think what goes around comes around and it’s usually hungry from the trip.
Hope this weekend is treating you well, I see #BloggersPitStop is hopping as usual, another happy place for me and so many other bloggers. 🙂
