LOVE ACTUALLY

Sap heaped upon syrup piled upon sugar, but still funny and with some quite meaningful and even poignant moments.

There are many faces of love, many stories, these are only a few, but what a lovely few.

Sure, some parts hamper the flow and are dreadfully contrived, but the message is still lovely.

My fav bits are:

  • Billy Mack (Bill Nighy) and Joe (Gregor Fisher) and their bond. Nighy’s striptease is priceless.

  • Hugh Grant as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is delightful (kind of his thing), especially his impromptu victory dance around 10 Downing Street and his conversation with Margaret Thatcher’s portrait, the saucy minx.

  • Billy Bob Thornton is scarily good as the smarmy President of the United States.

Rowan Atkinson is quirky/fantastic, as always.

Colin Firth is charming, well, duh, of course.

Andrew Lincoln (yes, now Rick with his American twang, of The Walking Dead fame) is most memorable. You just want him to make signs for you…or kill zombies for you. Sigh

Shaun of the Dead

softhed2One of the funniest movies every made. The British have such a unique sense of reality vs reality, it makes their comedy dark and delicious, but never dank.

A buddy/romcom film with so much heart the zombies are a delightful side note.

There is no way to describe how witty, silly, droll, sweet, and stunning a masterpiece this is without showing the movie.

Plenty of pop culture zaps, tons of dysfunctional family and friend interactions while trying to fight zombies, and too much energy to contain.

This film sets the gold standard for any zomcoms to come.softhed3

Lots of nods to George A. Romero’s zombie flicks, including the title.

Romero, flattered and impressed, offered Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright cameos in 2005’s Land of the Dead.

They’re zombies, see if you can find them.
