I have a new addiction and how!
It’s Australian.
It’s sassy.
Capricious.
Stylish.
Witty.
Sexy.
Murderous.
The Australia Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has a hit in the fearless and funny Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.  This Whodunit from Down Under is a beaut.

I love a good murder mystery and if you think the private detective genre had seen it all, it’s never seen anything like Miss Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis). Independent, open-minded, of a certain age, caring, compassionate, rollin’ in the dough, swanky, and a private detective to boot!

I have to praise the costume designer, Marion Boyce. This won’t happen often, you may notice a lack of fashion in my writings, but I practically drool over the Roaring Twenties costumes in this series; they’re exquisite, almost like a character unto themselves. If I ever became rich, I would probably dress as if I was in the 1920s all the time.

If you’re a fan of murder mysteries this show is the real McCoy. I don’t want to be spoon-fed killers or their motives; I want to get there myself. Thankfully Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger using Kerry Greenwood’s Phryne Fisher novels as a guide let their audience be clever and find out who did what to whom.

Her long-suffering and invaluable companion Dorothy “Dot” Williams (Ashleigh Cummings).
The handsome, intrigued and exasperated Detective Inspector John “Jack” Robinson (Nathan Page).
The boyishly eager Constable Hugh Collins (Hugo Johnstone-Burt).
The always handy and never ask too many questions Bert and Cec (Travis McMahon and Anthony Sharpe).
The prudish heart-of-gold Aunt Prudence (Miriam Margoyles).
The sharp as a tack and streetwise ward Jane (Ruby Rees-Wemyss).
The spirited and always drinking spirits doctor Dr. Elizabeth “Mac” Macmillan (Tammy MacIntosh).
The enigmatic and undaunted Mr. Butler (Richard Bligh) – he’s delightful.
Plus a host of amazing guest stars.
Together they roam the jazz clubs, mansions, and back alleys of Melbourne, finding adventure and trouble.

Series 1 & 2 were the bee’s knees, now we just have to wait for Series 3.

I went through a phase in my teens and early 20s when I was Australia crazy. I’m clearly still continuing my love affair with Australia; I hope they like me back at least a little so it’s not too stalkery. There were times I may have lapsed into an Australian accent, when I wasn’t belting out Men At Work songs, er, again, most likely in an Australian accent. Books, TV, movies, I just couldn’t get enough of Australia. Seriously, my The Man from Snowy River addiction almost required an intervention. Even typing the words Phar Lap makes me want to cry. I had this cerulean blue (insert X-Files Pusher reference here) Australia sweatshirt that I wore so much it eventually turned to rags. The only picture I could find of it is in black and white and for some reason I’m leaning against a big dirty hoe. I’m sure there’s a story to that if I could remember it; I’m guessing it was a fun weekend. When I wore that shirt I was inevitably asked, Have you ever been to Australia? I would answer, Someday. Someday has yet to arrive, but it’s on my rather rusty bucket list.

I got through the whole post without saying G’day…D’oh!

  3. I’ll have to watch out for that, the Twenties were cool, especially the clothes! It’s on Amazon but sadly not Amazon streaming at the moment (I’d like to watch at least one episode before committing to buying a whole series).

  6. To those commenters who don’t have TV or who hesitate to buy the series: Miss Fisher is the most incredibly marvelous character. I loved her from the very first scene I watched. Borrow a TV, stream the series, buy the DVD’s. I promise, you won’t regret this. And get this — during the US Open’s two weeks of play, my husband does nothing but watch the matches on TV, every single hour of every day, yet to my great surprise, when Miss Fisher came on our local PBS Tuesday’s at 9, he stopped watching tennis and sat with me to watch both weeks’ episodes. He loves it almost as much as I. Every word D Parker wrote about the show is accurate. If I were the actress playing Miss Fisher, I couldn’t accept a salary — I would be having too much fun inhabiting such a strong, intelligent, fearless, witty, sophisticated, glamorous, sexy woman. And those clothes! The hats! The automobile! Her home! Her dancing! All the other characters!

  10. I’ve read all the books and lived in Melbourne for many years, so when I heard they were making the series I had to watch – and I wasn’t disappointed – it’s excellent! I would really recommend the books too, they’re a great read.

      1. Oh yes, the clothes are stunning! I used to have a vintage clothing stall at an antique place and the 1920s stuff was always my favourite 🙂 I must say I haven’t seen series 2 yet, I must catch up!

  12. G’day LOL:) I’m an Aussie and just love Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. She is a fabulous character and as I love that era – the clothes, old cars etc it is a joy to watch.

    1. Oh Lisa, you’re in for a treat! It’s an utter delight. It’s on ABC (Australian Broadcast Corporation), plays on PBS in U.S. and Canada, on DVD, and I think it’s on Netflix and a few other streaming spots. I think there are 3 series so far, 4th started but I haven’t seen it yet – I can’t wait, really, I just adore it.

  17. I adore this series! I have read all of the books in my library (only 6 of them) and need to get some transferred from the other libraries.

    I hope they make the movies as planned since Essie Davis doesn’t want to England to film another season of the TV series.

    1. Yes, she’s amazing, I’ve signed the petition to have the BBC make her the next Doctor (Doctor Who), I think it’s time for a female Doctor and she’d be incredible. Can’t wait for the next season of Miss Fisher in the meantime. 😉

    1. It isn’t, they ended on the 3rd season, though we need more, at least a movie.
      There is a spin-off, Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries but I’ve yet to view it. 🙂
