Salt Sugar Fat

1salt3Humans are vulnerable.

To predators.
The weather.
Our environment.
Other humans.
Perhaps most of all, to our own DNA.

Corporations learned of our weakness and have spent decades and dollars figuring out how to exploit those weaknesses.

They spend time, money, resources trying to figure out how to make us crave food that’s bad for us. Insert evil laughter here.

Imagine if even a small percentage of those resources had been put into say, curing cancer, MS, Parkinson’s, Diabetes, Heart disease, Asthma, Epilepsy, Autism, HIV/AIDS, etc. you might be sitting with a loved one who died needlessly, laughing and talking instead of craving junk food.

We’ve been seduced. By packaging. Marketing. Advertisements. Celebrity endorsements. Claims. By the food formulas these companies come up with to trick us into craving.1salt5

Processed foods are full of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Governments are passing bills (in Canada, C-18) to force farmers to no longer store seeds, but they’ll have to buy from corporations. This so-called Agricultural Growth Act will put more money, power, and control in the hands of: Monsanto, DuPont, Dow, Bayer, and Syngenta. Multi-national companies will be allowed to undo or limit how and if farmers can store seeds. This increases the cost to farmers and consumers, reduces the farmer’s autonomy, risks Canadian sovereignty, and of course, puts our food system at further risk.

Find out what your government is doing in your country. Say no to corporations controlling our food supply.

Look at food. It’s there for nutrition, energy, and pleasure. It’s not a companion. It doesn’t love you. It’s not going to fill an empty space in your life.

I was riveted by this book, Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Michael Moss (Signal/McClelland & Stewart).  At times, the information made me feel a little sick, but I always say, it’s better to know the truth and face it then cower in the dark, not knowing what’s coming next. If you read only one book about food, this would be it.

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with food for too many years. Now I’m trying to teach my son what food is…and isn’t.

If a company has to spend millions using top scientists and researchers to make you like, crave, and buy their foods, if they have to control the government to make them bend to their will, and use junk science to make you believe – there’s something really wrong.1salt7

When someone tries to sell you something, consider the source and what they’re going to get from it.1salt4

      1. Here in Canada it’s a bill about to be passed, C-18, it will give control of our seeds to multi-national corporations. That’s just wrong.

  1. In so many other places GMO’s are being banned! Also I rarely eat junk food, often I cannot even stand it’s taste….most people at the natural health college I study at are like this, some can’t even stand the smell of Subway!

  2. I cannot eat sugars, especially corn syrup, or oils/greases and when I get it hidden in foods it does bad things in my body. I and my family are hyper-vigilant now about what we eat.

    1. I hope this is a trend for more people, but bad food is pushed, lobbied for, and subsidized while farmers and healthy food companies are being harassed and being abused instead of supported. That’s a crazy backward system.

The whole story is a bitter one….but D.Parker says this “If a company has to spend millions using top scientists and researchers to make you like, crave, and buy their foods, if they have to control the government to make them bend to their will, and use junk science to make you believe – there’s something really wrong. When someone tries to sell you something, consider the source and what they’re going to get from it”
