Captain America: The Winter Soldier

If anything, Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan are even cuter this time. And thanks for adding Anthony Mackie. Hey, don’t judge me, we’re all authorized to crush now and then.americac12

Big Brother is watching. As opposed to us watching Big Brother or Big Brother Canada or Big Brother UK.  Just cause you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not surveilling  you.

Robert Redford is awesome, well, cause he just is.americac4

This is a political movie with superheroes, special effects, car chases, and gunfire thrown in.

Message #1: Believing without temperance leads to being extreme without moderation and with bad slogans.

Message #2: The 21st Century is a digital book and people are reading your story all the time, whether you know it, or not.

Message #3: If our freedom is overtly threatened we resist, but if manipulated by fear we willingly sacrifice our freedom. Since 9/11 society has become a mass of fear and distraction. The more afraid we are, the more we seek distraction. We’re self-comforting with alcohol, drugs (legal and otherwise), food, products, services, internet, gambling, fashion, celebrity, social media, smart phones and other electronic toys, TV, movies, etc. Still, our fear level grows and with it, a willingness to give up freedoms piecemeal, until it’ll be too late.americac11

The scene where HYDRA/S.H.I.E.L.D. is trying to kill Nick Fury is one of my favourite car chase scenes in awhile.

More Black Widow/Natasha Ramonov (Scarlett Johansson).

Lots of action and great lines, including,“Be careful Steve.” and “Would you like to play a game?”. Cool pop culture references; makes me think Danny Pudi (Abed from Community) should have got those lines, still, nice to see him outside Greendale.

Black Widow  is complex, smart, sexy, mysterious, quirky, dangerous, and needs her own movie. All these superheroes, where’s the superheroine? americac13

How do you fight a friend or a loved one? Even if it’s necessary, it’s torture, pure tragedy.

The Winter Solider/Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) is the classic dark reflection of our protagonist. As Bucky, he and Steve Rogers were the same – brave, honest, sacrificing, and a great friend to the end. As a villain, he’s channeled all his amazing abilities into destroying.

Bucky was RogersBFF and some might say sidekick so it’s only natural he haunted Rogers when he failed to save him. So his return as The Winter Soldier, a programmed assassin is profound and poignant. It makes Rogers face his own feelings of confusion, guilt, ambiguity, and indecision. He’s not sure if he’s really fighting for the good guys and how can you be a super soldier if you can’t even save your best friend?americac5 Maybe Bucky wouldn’t have been so messed up if he didn’t want people to call him Bucky. Just sayin’.

They blatantly set this up for, Captain America 3: Steve Rogers Finally Gets A Date.  americac10

Anyone watching Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. before seeing this movie will have been privy to some major spoilers.

We see the world as more open. But in this age of information, is what we don’t know way more important than what we know?

This was an excellent addition to this latest Avengers incarnation. Action, adventure, drama, politics, comedy…can’t wait for Avengers: The Age of Ultron. Guess I’ll have to.
