SPEED

spee13

This movie was 20 years ago. Really? Seems like only yesterday probably because it’s on TV like 80 times a week.

1. If a bus speeds by you it’s probably because a madman has attached a bomb to it and it can’t slow down or it will explode. Or the driver wants to get to his next smoke break. Despite speeding and crashing into things this bus was probably still easier to access than most city buses.

2. The original Jack (Keanu Reeves) and Annie (Sandra Bullock) were Jeff Bridges and Ellen Degeneres. Ok, that would have been a very different movie.

3. Over a dozen buses were used for this movie.speed12

4. Officially Graham Yost is listed as the Speed writer, but Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, The Avengers, Serenity, Much Ado About Nothing, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Dollhouse) rewrote a lot of the script, including most of the dialogue uncredited (but paid). Come on, Buffy fans could tell.

5. The director Jan de Bont wanted Reeves to have a short haircut for the movie. The studio execs were horrified, threatening to postpone filming till it grew back. Once again studio people, wrong, he looked awesome.speed86. Quentin Tarantino was given the chance to direct, wow, can you imagine Speed Tarantino style? I’m picturing Reservoir Dogs on a Bus…

7. Sandra Bullock learned to drive a bus for the movie so her scenes would look authentic – she passed her driving test first time.

8. Alleged George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Keaton, Tom Cruise, and Tom Hanks were also considered for this movie. At least 2 Batmans, a Terminator, and John McClane…interesting.

9. Meryl Streep, Sigourney Weaver, Kim Basinger, Kathleen Turner, Debra Winger, Carrie Fisher, Michelle Pfeiffer, Rosanna Arquette, Daryl Hannah, Meg Ryan, Demi Moore, Jodie Foster, Bridget Fonda, Diane Lane, Sarah Jessica Parker, Brooke Shields, Julia Roberts, Winona Ryder, etc allegedly turned down this movie – I’m guessing some of these actresses now wish they’d said yes. Really? Brooke Shields turned down a role?speed510. Check out the soundtrack for Speed including but not limited to: Billy Idol, KISS, Gin Blossoms, Gary Numan, Cracker, etc. Songs from or inspired by the movie, sure, why not?

11. Dennis Hopper is the ideal villian – he’s both evil and sympathetic. Gone but not forgotten.speed412. Keanu Reeves did 90% of this own stunts during Speed. Reeves breaking the glass on the bus at the beginning was an accident, but was left in. And then he said no to the sequel – he didn’t like danger that much.

13. There are really obvious factual errors in this movie, including but not limited to:
if Jack (Keanu Reeves)can speed up the train why doesn’t he try to slow it down instead?
As the bus jumps across the freeway gap it’s on an angle, but lands perfectly, it really would have tilted and the front tires would pop
Watch Dennis Hopper’s hands, remember, he’s supposed to be missing his left thumb.speed614. I wish Jeff Daniels had a bigger part. Even when he’s the lead I wish he had a bigger part.

15. There’s always been a lot of criticism of Reeves‘ acting, that it’s wooden. I don’t know, it works for me.speed10

“I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to SPEED around a city, keeping its SPEED over fifty, and if its SPEED dropped, it would explode! I think it was called, ‘The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down.’ “~Homer Simpson

  1. Speed
This was such a great show with all kinds of interesting characters… Keanu Reeves the
main actor was so great. It doesn’t seem like 20 years have passed….
The soundtrack for Speed looks like a cool one with Billy Idol, Gin Blossoms and Cracker…

    1. I think critics pick on him cause they won’t let go of the Bill & Ted thing, move on, the guy was acting, more or less. 😉 Dennis Hopper was an expert at playing bad.
