The Paradise

para2Remember a book you were reading that you just didn’t want to put down? You knew you had other things to do. But you couldn’t tear your self away. This BBC TV series is that…you know you have other things to do, but you just can’t stop watching.

A young girl arrives in a northern English town thinking she will find work at her Uncle’s shop.

Times are tough and her Uncle is struggling. Instead she finds work at a high-end department store right across the street.

Denise (Joanna Vanderham) is clever, beautiful, and hard-working. Despite being just a salesgirl at The Paradise she attracts much attention with her ingenious ideas, character, her strength, independence, and her beauty.

Some are jealous, some people feel threatened, but Moray (Emun Elliott) the owner of the store is fascinated and inspired.

Throw in a rich daughter of a Lord who wants Moray for herself, intrigue, sabotage, plots, great costumes, amazing cast, schemes, murder, ambition, and more – this period piece takes you on an armchair journey you’re sorry will ever end.

para3Based on Au Bonheur des Dames, the eleventh novel in the Rougon-Macquart by Émile Zola. The series is worth a read as well.

Sadly it only had 2 seasons when it was not renewed, but it’s an absorbing, albeit a tad sanitized look at trade in the late 1800s.

But if you’re pining for Downton Abbey, there are a lot of other amazing period pieces out there, waiting to be loved.

  1. Hello D. Parker….There are thousands of fans of The Paradise that are disgusted that this series is not being continued by BBC. Perhaps you are not aware, but there is a Facebook page “Save the Paradise” where fans come together to help each other with finding ways to contact BBC, Magazines, Newspapers, etc. to try & get this lovely series back on the screen for
more seasons. There is so much more of the story to be told & so much more of the characters that need to be developed! There is also an online petition to save The Paradise. Won’t you check it out & sign it? We are trying desperately for some one to take notice of our efforts, or the possibility of another network to pick up where BBC dropped the ball. Thanks for listening!

    1. Thanks, I know, it would be great if it came back, there are so many more stories to be told. When I repost I can mention Save The Paradise, but sadly, like Terra Nova our efforts made no difference. I wish you luck. Thank Donna for dropping by. 🙂 Sincerely, Donna

      1. Hi Donna, Thanks for taking the time to respond & to make the effort to mention Save The Paradise…I know the show, Ripper Street. was dropped by BBC & the mass effort of the fans enabled it to be picked up by Amazon for future episodes! The fans of The Paradise are hoping for this same outcome. I appreciate you spreading the word!
        Best Wishes,
        Donna

      2. I know pushing for a movie sometimes works and gives some closure. There’s a WWII period piece, Bomb Girls, it was cancelled and it got a movie, same with Firefly. There’s always hope. 🙂 Thanks for dropping by, Donna
