The Miley Cyrus Wrecking Ball

Wearing more than the average Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model or Victoria’s Secret model, Miley Cyrus has managed to capture and keep the attention of the easily-distracted public.

What it is about Miley that get people so worked up? ImageDo people get worked up every time a celebrity does something offensive? Wow, they must be in a lather all the time.  Is it because she was a child star and they want to think of her as wholesome? Are people upset about Tyler Lautner’s shirtless scenes? No. Instead they say she looks like a stripper and he looks hot.  Double standard much.

Parents let their young children idolize celebrities, call them role models. I don’t get it.  So is it really guilt or embarrassment masquerading as indignation about Miley Cyrus? Are parents upset because they allow and even encourage their children to worship celebrities, finding out some of them are: alcoholics, drug addicts, criminals, adulterers, abusers, liars, sex addicts, stupid, irresponsible, etc.  Celebrities lie for a living, they pretend to be something they’re not. They’re not meant to be a moral compass for us or our children. They’re meant to entertain.wrongwithworld1

Know what I find offensive?

Children as sex slaves.

Starving children. Abused and neglected children.

Children working in factories.

Rape. University students chanting and laughing about raping underage girls.

War. Murder.

Vulnerable citizens – children, disabled, seniors being maltreated.

Those things I find offensive.

I didn’t have to watch Hannah Montana, I also didn’t have to watch Miley gyrating against Robin Thicke. I don’t have to let my child watch it either. I can turn the channel, not click on the link, etc. I have that power.

Miley Cyrus twerked, spent some quality time with a foam finger and erupted herself and Robin Thicke into publicity nirvana, but what did she do to bother you? How did her bump’n’grind affect you and your everyday life?

The point is, celebrities like Miley Cyrus and her publicity masters sure know how to get people worked up. They wanted attention. They got it. They’ll continue to get it.

Miley Cyrus has a new title – Publicity Goddess and the world is her gyrating, tongue-flapping oyster.

Very me

  1. Thank. You.

Seriously, I don’t think people understand they can turn the TV off or click to another channel. I’ve been thinking about this endless media tornado that is Miley Cyrus’ obsessive need to twerk and stick her tongue out and my only conclusion is the more we encourage her the more she’ll do it. I also have to wonder if by allowing our children to see celebrities as role models, we somehow force celebrities into acting like idiots so we stop seeing them as role models. I mean, after all, celebrities are people too. They may be in the public eye, but I’m sure Miley could have never imagined her fans couldn’t tell the difference between the character or Miley and her actually person. Now she’s making sure they can, while also reaping the benefits of so much attention.

My role models growing up were people like JK Rowling and Meg Cabot. I never idolized celebrities, but my parents also never sat me in front of the TV endlessly. I still remember a time before we had a computer in our house. Great post!
