There’s nothing wrong with silly activities. Nothing wrong with partying. Yet some activities that go on during Frosh weeks at universities are inappropriate. Feigned shock isn’t going to help. It’s like the perfect storm, isn’t it? Vulnerable youth, many away from home for the first time. Alcohol, binge drinking, drugs, lack of sleep, no parental supervision, wanting to impress and of course, the scariest factor, wanting to ‘fit in’. This ‘fitting in’ issue is the same reason so much hazing takes place. While the administrators, student union leaders, etc. sputter on about there being no place for this at this university the truth is, sadly, there’s a place for it everywhere.
What fascinated me when I saw the St. Mary’s frosh video were the women smiling, laughing, chanting, and cheering about non-consenting sex. Really? Women smiling, laughing, chanting, and cheering about rape? I wonder if they knew what they were doing, then again, what’s scarier, if they did know or didn’t know?
Were they smiling, laughing, chanting, and cheering when Nova Scotia teen Rehtaeh Parsons committed suicide after being bullied concerning an alleged rape?
As for the men in the video, they are smiling, laughing, chanting, and cheering about rape. That is spine-chilling. The men and women in this video are the future of Canada. I weep for the future.
People have been yammering on about Miley Cyrus twerking Robin Thicke while students are off at university smiling, laughing, chanting and cheering about rape. Or being raped. Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke were doing a consensual performance, a performance because they’re performers. You can turn off the TV, internet, etc. if you don’t like their performance. How do you turn off students at university smiling, laughing, chanting and cheering about rape? That’s real, what happened on the MTV VMAs was an act.
There’s nothing wrong with partying. Nothing wrong with having fun. But there’s something very wrong with a society where their youth smile, laugh, chant and cheer about raping young girls.
